When to trim your ends

Having your ends trimmed regularly is a very important step when maintaining a healthy head of hair.  There are a few signs that you are in need of a trim: Tangling, light colored tips,ends when all other hair is dark, overly dry brittle ends, and if you can see the split it is way past time. Women with high lighted, permanent hair color, permanent relaxers, or tightly coiled hair typically are candidates for more frequent trimming.

 Far too often trims are skipped to ‘save the length’ of the hair. Unfortunately going extended periods of time without trimming can lead to lots of unnecessary damage to the ends. Once a hair has split there is no way to repair it. Yes, there are many products and conditioning treatments that claim to repair broken ends but they are really temporary fixes. The treatments fill the empty spaces but these bonds are broken again with a few days of basic manipulation. Split ends like to hug every hair near it, with or without splits of their own, causing lots of tangling. They also like to travel up the hair shaft. The only way to stop it is by clipping the split end completely off.

Strengthening (Protein) Treatment Benefits

Great hair is balanced hair! Focusing on replenishing hair with proteins is essential for a balanced head of hair.

About 91% of the hair is made up of protein and amino acids. The protein is keratin. The amino acids are made up hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Proteins and amino acids in the hair are the lost everyday. Simple combing, brushing, cleaning or environmental conditions break down these bonds leaving ‘gaps’ in the hair.   Coloring, relaxing and straightening hair  also break down these bonds leaving the hair feeling weak and sometimes brittle.  Administering a protein/amino acid based treatment will help keep hair balanced!

Hair that is balanced behaves well! On the contrary, too frequent protein treatments can have an adverse effect on the hair (over proteinized) making it hard, dry and brittle.

The Truth about Sulfate-Free Shampoo

In a more health conscious world we are living in it is no surprise that the beauty industry has not missed a beat when it comes to its beauty products. Sulfate-free products have been on the rise for many years. Sulfate has been in many products for ages! So what’s the big deal?! What is sulfate? Is it really that harmful? Is it okay to keep using shampoos containing sulfate? Why use sulfate-free products?!

 

Sulfate is short for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). It is a surfactant, or ingredient that is used to break up dirt and oil build up. It’s popularity is due to its deep cleansing, emulsifying (suds, foam) and easy rinsing abilities. People equate lots of suds with lots of clean, right?!  So naturally, many product companies have used it as a first ingredient for decades. SLS is found in many products such as shampoo, soap, and even toothpaste.

 

SLS has been known to cause irritation to the scalp, strips hair color (artificial), reverses keratin or amino-acid based straightening treatments, and may also cause frizziness to curly hair. People with skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis should look into using shampoos and soaps that are sulfate-free. As for those with lots of texture in their hair sulfate-free products have proven to maintain a smoother curl with little to no frizz. SLS opens the hair shaft to deeply clean the hair removing build up also stripping the hairs natural moisture which often leaves the hair shaft open resulting in frizzy strands.

So the sulfate has been removed. How does the hair and scalp get clean?  What does one do without volumes of suds?  Easy! There are other thorough, gentle, non-stripping surfactants to choose from. Look for ingredients, mild surfactants such as Sodium Lauroyl Isethinionate (also known as Iselux), Sodium Methyl Cocoyl and Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate in your shampoos.  These ingredients are naturally derived from plants and minerals. Some will give little to no lather while some will give lots of lather. Be mindful to rinse hair thoroughly before you shampoo to remove excess build up. They are very gentle yet very effective in cleansing the scalp and hair leaving manageable and retaining the skin and hairs natural moisture.  They will also help preserve the vibrancy in your hair color, and won’t strip your keratin or amino acid based straightening treatments.

Cold Weather MANEtenance

Winter is in full swing! It’s that time of year when lower temps outside prompt us to turn up the heat inside. Heat causes dryness, especially in the air indoors. I’ve a few tips to help maintain a healthy mane all season long!

1.Hydration Situation

Drink your water! The chill of the outside air makes it easy to forget to keep up your daily water intake. Drinking water is a great internal way to combat dryness in your skin and hair. Also, a warm-humidifier in the home can help replenish the moisture that central heating takes away from the air. Add an aromatherapy oil to your humidifier to create a spa-like atmosphere to your home!

2. Cleansing and Conditioning

Choose shampoos and conditioners with higher moisture content and lower alcohol content. Sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners will help retain the hairs natural moisture. Deep moisture conditioning is ideal at least twice a month. A few popular  ingredients are shea butter, argan oil, marula oil and olive oil. These will impart intense moisture needed to combat and protect hair from the cold and dry air. Remember that pathenols and silicones found in shampoos, conditioners and leave-in conditioners are great shields during this season.

3. Heat Styling

Turn it down and/or off!  High heat in water, blow dryers and other heat styling tools open the hair follicle causing it to lose its natural moisture. Be sure you are lowering the heat of your blow dryers and styling irons. For optimal moisture retention lower all heat settings. Be sure to use a leave-in conditioner and/or styling lotion that offers heat protection.

4. MANEtenance 

Go for the top knot! Buns, braids and other such up ‘dos will help shield hair from excess exposure to the elements. Braiding hair or sewn in extensions are also great protective styles. Cotton hats and scarves tend to suck moisture out of the hair. Choose fabrics such as silk, satin. Be sure to brush hair and/or wrap hair nightly to distribute natural hair oils from root to tip.

5. Supplement

Because hair grows from the inside out its best to help nourish it with a daily supplement. Look for hair vitamins rich in vitamins E, A and D, biotin, fatty acids, and amino acids. Also, choose to eat foods rich with these nutrients such as salmon (omega-3 fatty acids), walnuts (vitamin E), sweet potatoes (vitamin A), and eggs (protein). Remember to drink plenty of water and eat your fresh veggies and fruits! It helps distribute the vitamins throughout the body!
