5 Things You Need to Stop Doing to Your Hair Now!

We all have a few bad habits we can drop. When it comes to daily hair care, new healthy habits must start! Here are a few things you need to stop doing and start doing to get you on your healthy hair path!

1. Heat styling daily. Restyling your hair with hot tools daily drys ends out causing it to break. It may not be noticeable at first but over time you will lose length.

2. Putting off trims.  Split ends can quickly turn into split mid-shaft! You will need to have more trimmed off. I recommend trimming or ‘dusting’ end every 8-10 weeks depending on your daily hair care routine.

 3. Skipping protein treatments. Healthy hair is balanced with moisture and protein. These treatments replace protein that is lost over time leaving hair strong and balanced. When your hair feels ‘mushy’ and doesn’t hold styles then it is time to get your treatment.

  4. Going to bed without tying your hair down. Wrapping, rolling, pin curling, twisting or braiding hair before bed is key to maintaining your hair. This will certainly keep you from heat styling in the morning!

         5. Detangling hair too quickly. The detangling process can be time consuming when done with care. Always use a detangling leave-in conditioner. I suggest starting in the thickest part combing from the ends up to the roots securing each section once detangled. Take your time! Your hair will thank you!

How often should you shampoo your hair?

special-occasion2All great hairstyles begin with clean hair!

The number of times you clean your hair depends on your lifestyle and/or if you have a diagnosed scalp disorder. In general it is okay to shampoo your hair every 3-14 days. Assessing your scalp, hair texture, and if your hair has been chemically treated in conjunction with your daily activity will help you determine how often you should shampoo. Choosing the right shampoo is as important as how often you should clean your hair.

For fine hair choose a shampoo that will thicken your hair strands. Ingredients to look for: Hydrolyzed oatmeal protein, Hydrolyzed wheat protein, Hydrolyzed vegetable protein. These ingredients will penetrate into the hair shaft easily and plump up your strands leaving your hair full of body!

For dry hair, choose a shampoo that will impart moisture. Ingredients to look for: Shea butter, Nettles, Rosemary, Jojoba, Almond oil, Vitamin E, Abyssinian oil. For severely dry hair it is advisable to to a deep oil treatment before you shampoo or a deep moisture treatment after you shampoo.

For thick, coarse hair, choose a shampoo that will help to soften and detangle your hair. Ingredients to look for: Rose hip, Seaweed, Grapeseed oil, Camellia oil, Almond oil, Avacado oil. These ingredients help to in part and seal in moisture. They are also great for detangling hair!

For brittle hair, choose a shampoo that will help heal the hair. Ingredients to look for:  Baobab plant extract, Quinoa extract, Bamboo extract, Sugar cane, Sage. When healing brittle, damaged hair it is important to use a shampoo that will impart strength into your hair!

For dry, itchy scalp choose a shampoo that will help soothe and eliminate flakes from the scalp. Ingredients to look for: Zinc ommadine, Salicylic acid, Menthol, Chamomile, Peppermint oil. For a very irritated scalp, put the shampoo directly on the scalp, cover with plastic cap, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes!

For any hair type, a clarifying shampoo is great for removing excess dirt and oil. Ingredients to look for: Baking soda, Vitamin C, Hydrolyzed oatmeal protein, Aloe, Chamomile. Deep cleansing shampoos are a great first choice to ensure that your 2nd and 3rd shampoo and conditioner will penetrate the hair shaft properly!

If you have a scalp condition, such as psoriasis, your physician or dermatologist may prescribe you a shampoo that will gently exfoliate the scalp. These shampoos are generally used 5-7 days a week for the best results. If you are unable to shampoo as frequently, ask for a topical cream to help manage your scalp disorder.

If you sweat heavily due to exercise the sweat can leave behind salt deposits causing the scalp to be very dry and at times flaky. Always use a clarifying shampoo to remove the salt build up. I find cleaning my own hair 1-3 times a week to be the most suitable way to maintain a healthy head of hair while in a steady workout routine. For days that you don’t do a traditional shampoo try using a dry shampoo to hold you over until your next shampoo. Dry shampooing will remove a small amount of dirt and excess oils leaving the hair fresh and shiny!

If you are heat styling your hair choose a product line that offers heat protection. My favorite is by ColorProof! The shampoos, conditioners, leave-in conditioners and dry shampoo contain a great heat protecting ingredient called HelioPlex. It literally wraps around each hair shaft creating a barrier between your hair against the heat.

Benefits of a Custom Install Unit

It’s a new day! And there are new ways to protect and grow your hair with extensions. Custom install units/U-part wigs is a quickly growing service option with hair care professionals. I have been making and wearing my own since 2010. My personal need came from not having time to sit in another stylists chair to get a traditional sew-in. My lifestyle is a big contributing factor. On average I workout 1-5 times each week and I sweat A LOT! Whether I go in the morning or at night I needed to have the flexibility to restyle my hair without damaging it or completely take my extensions out and reinstall in a short amount of time. Soon after I began taking advanced classes to perfect my newfound hair craft. I then began making them for clients. What I saw next was a great improvement in my own hair as well as my clients. Overall balance of moisture, protein, length and edge retention has been amazing! Even my virgin hair extension benefits from not having to be removed at the track and re-shaped every few months. No more long stints underneath the dryer. Also, the fact that it takes way less time in the salon for the service allows me to service clients within better time frames for reinstallation.  Being able to remove and treat my clients hair every 4, 6, or 8 weeks has greatly reduced excess shedding and doesn’t allow time for mildew to build up. So farewell to the traditional sew-in extensions and hello to custom install wigs!

When to trim your ends

Having your ends trimmed regularly is a very important step when maintaining a healthy head of hair.  There are a few signs that you are in need of a trim: Tangling, light colored tips, ends when all other hair is dark, overly dry brittle ends, and if you can see the split it is way past time. Women with high lighted, permanent hair color, permanent relaxers, or tightly coiled hair typically are candidates for more frequent trimming.

Far too often trims are skipped to ‘save the length’ of the hair. Unfortunately going extended periods of time without trimming can lead to lots of unnecessary damage to the ends. Once a hair has split there is no way to repair it. Yes, there are many products and conditioning treatments that claim to repair broken ends but they are really temporary fixes. The treatments fill the empty spaces but these bonds are broken again with a few days of basic manipulation. Split ends like to hug every hair near it, with or without splits of their own, causing lots of tangling. They also like to travel up the hair shaft. The only way to stop it is by clipping the split end completely off.

Spring Hair Care

Spring is here!!!  This means lots of humidity…  *insert sarcastic Hooray here. Fortunately this gives us a chance to explore different styling options as well as products. Survive the rainy days and summer beach body workouts with these styling and product options!

  • Custom install u-part or full wig. One of my favorite protective styles is sure to cut down time in your daily hair routine! This extension option is customized to fit your head. It can be secured by sewing onto a perimeter braid. You can shampoo regularly and wear this style for up to 6-8 weeks. It can also be secured with wig clips for more versatility. The clip on, full wig option is great for those who frequent the gym!

  • Smoothing Treatment. For those with lots of texture a smoothing treatment may be ideal for you! My personal favorite is the Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System (STS) which is chemical free and keeps hair smooth and frizz free for up to 3 months! This treatment is also perfect for those transitioning from relaxed to natural and those with high-lift color. Another personal favorite is the Peter Coppola Keratin Smoothing Treatment; a Keratin and Ceramide, Aldehyde-free & Formaldehyde-free Keratin Treatment.  This restorative treatment will also leave hair soft and smooth for up to 3 months.
  • Bun Day. Nothing shields the hair from humidity more than a bun! Whether it’s a top-knot or classic low bun, this is the ultimate all-day, any occasion style. Farewell to bad hair days.

  • Curly. Girls love curls! Rod sets, twist-outs and braid-out styles are an easy way to conquer humidity! The process combined with deep moisturizing foaming lotion and finishing products is a sure way to combat frizz. These styles typically last for 2 weeks with proper maintenance! My new curly hair product obessession is DevaCurl! As a certified DevaCurl DevaCut stylist this line provides a variety of curl taming products.

  • Braids. With or without added extensions braids are running the hair mill very steadily these days! French braids, fishtails and Senegalese twist are absolute humidity protectors. Try any of these in an up-do for an easy 1-2 week style. I recommend wearing braids (with or without extensions) for no more than 6-8 weeks as prolonged wear can cause damage to the hair. It is extremely important to keep hair thoroughly moisturized while wearing braid/twist styles with added extensions.

  • Moisturize! Your hair is like a sponge. Deep conditioning will help keep your hair from pulling moisture from the atmosphere. My in-salon favs are Deep by Design Essentials, Crazy Smooth Anti-frizz treatment masque by ColorProof and Heaven in Hair by DevaCurl. Get ultimate pentration when done as a steam treatment! Remember, products that will moisturize your hair will always have water as the first ingredient!

  • Leave-in conditioner! This will help detangle as well as add another layer of protection to the hair. Leave-in conditioner is especially important for those who will be doing any sort of thermal styling. It acts as a heat protectant and fights frizz! My in-salon favs are HCO by Design Essentials, Coconut and Monoi coconut water curl refresher by Design Essentials, PureRelease by ColorProof and No-Comb detangling spray by DevaCurl.

  • Seal and Finish. It is very important to seal in all of the wonderful moisture you’ve put into your hair with a sealer! Sealers often contain light oils and polymers that provide ultimate frizz protection. My favs are HumidityRx by ColorProof, TruCurl anti-frizz oil by ColorProof, Coconut and Monoi intense shine oil mist by Design Essentials, Reflections Liquid Shine spray by Design Essentials and DevaCurl Shine Spray.
